Theopaschitism

Theopaschitism
The core meaning of this term is "the suffering of God," referring to a version of Monophysitism (q.v.) that appeared in Constantinople (q.v.) in 519, namely, that the Godhead (the Word, or logos) actually suffered and died on the cross, as expressed by the formula "one of the Trinity suffered in the flesh." Peter the Fuller's (q.v.) addition of a theopaschite phrase to the Trisagion (q.v.) produced an uproar that resulted in his exile. The akoimetoi (q.v.) monks staunchly opposed this view. Nevertheless, Justinian I (q.v.), in an attempt to pacify the Monophysites, issued a law in 533 supporting the heresy (q.v.), though to no avail.
